Import a D&D Beyond character into Eldritch OS
You can import a D&D Beyond character into Eldritch OS by pasting the character’s public URL into the Characters page. The sheet is built from the character’s data in a few seconds, and your GM can then put it on the table as a token that stays in step with the sheet.
This guide covers the whole path: making the character public, importing it, checking what came across, and getting it onto a scene.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- The character must be public on D&D Beyond. Eldritch OS reads the same public character data D&D Beyond exposes for a shared link; a private character returns an error.
- You need an Eldritch OS account. During the alpha, access is by invitation — see the end of this page.
- Have the URL or the ID. Either works: the full
www.dndbeyond.com/characters/12345678link, or just the number at the end.
Step 1 — Import the character
Section titled “Step 1 — Import the character”- Open Characters in Eldritch OS.
- Click Import from D&D Beyond.
- Paste the character URL or ID and click Import.
When the import finishes you are taken straight to the new character’s sheet.
If you see an error, the two common causes are a private character (make it public on D&D Beyond and try again) and a mistyped URL.
Step 2 — Check what came across
Section titled “Step 2 — Check what came across”The importer maps each part of the D&D Beyond character to the matching entry in the Eldritch OS content catalog: species, class and subclass, background, feats, equipment, spells, and the choices you made in the builder.
It matches by name, with a little tolerance for D&D Beyond’s naming — a possessive prefix or a trailing parenthetical is stripped before matching, so a feature D&D Beyond lists as “Feature name (Wizard)” still finds its entry.
Two things to look for on the sheet after an import:
- Equipment the catalog does not have — homebrew items, mostly — keeps its name and quantity but shows without a matching catalog entry. You can leave it as a reminder or replace it with a compendium item.
- Spells the catalog does not have are not added. If a homebrew spell is missing from the sheet, that is why; add it from your compendium.
If the character uses only content that is in the catalog, the sheet should be complete. Scan the ability scores, class levels, and spell list once before your first session.
Step 3 — Get the character onto the table
Section titled “Step 3 — Get the character onto the table”Importing puts the character in your character list. Three short steps put it in a game.
- Your GM adds you to the campaign by the email address on your Eldritch OS account.
- Your GM adds the character to the party roster from the campaign workspace. The picker lists characters owned by campaign members, so yours appears once you are in.
- On the scene, the GM clicks “Add Party”, which places a token for every roster character not already on the map. That token stays in step with the character sheet: hit points, armor class and conditions on the sheet are pushed to the token, and damage taken on the table is written back to the sheet.
From there the character behaves like any other: initiative, conditions, hit points and dice all work from the sheet.
What the alpha does not do yet
Section titled “What the alpha does not do yet”We keep a page of exactly what ships and what does not. For import specifically:
- It is a one-time copy. Eldritch OS does not sync with D&D Beyond afterwards. If you level up on D&D Beyond, import again and use the new copy; if you level up in Eldritch OS, D&D Beyond does not know.
- The app does not yet list what it could not match. The importer knows which items and spells it skipped, but that list is not shown after a successful import. Until it is, the check in Step 2 is on you.
- No export back out. Taking a character out of Eldritch OS as a file is on the roadmap, not shipped.
Join the alpha playtest
Section titled “Join the alpha playtest”Eldritch OS is in a closed alpha with a small group of GMs running real sessions. If you want to run yours here, join the alpha playtest and say a little about your table — we are inviting tables in waves.
